EMPOWERING UC PATIENTS TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THEIR TREATMENT JOURNEY

What was the ask?

Pfizer observed a substantial communication gap between patients and their doctors. We were tasked with creating a digital tool to bridge this gap and enhance the quality of conversations between UC patients and gastroenterologists.

STAGE 1: DISCOVERY

PATIENT INTERVIEWS

Key Takeaways:

  • They often don’t what questions they should be asking and concerns they should be raising

  • They feel like their concerns are brushed off by their GI (gastroenterologist

  • They see their GIs as just a “medicine expert”, not someone who treats their holistic health

My doctor seems to be a treat the symptoms as you go, kind of guy and then figure it out later. At this point, I don’t know if I agree with that 100%.
— Josh, UC Patient

HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEWS

Key Findings:

  • They do not have the time required to sit and listen to patients talk through all their concerns

  • They feel most patients have a problem with adherence and are therefore less sympathetic to them

  • They believe patients see them as their “hero” in their journey of their battle against UC

They speak highly of you, and you earn your respect for your patient. They appreciate the impact that you’re having on their quality of life which is really great to see.
— Dr. AS, Gastroenterologist

CLIENT WORKSHOP

We held client workshop to pinpoint where this tool would be most beneficial in the UC journey. Our goal was to gather insights into the key tasks and challenges faced by both patients and healthcare professionals, identify major pain points, and define the long-term objectives for building this digital experience.

STAGE 2: DEFINITION

STAGE 3: DESIGN

INTERACTIVE WIREFRAME

Using the sketches as a foundation, we built an interactive wireframe prototype with a focus around motivating users to engage with the app on a daily basis through giving users the ability to understand their health from a wholistic point of view. As a result, the two major focuses during this stage were showcasing symptom tracker trends and gamifying the tracking experience.
